my high line walking tour
2.5 kilometers crossing three neighborhoods — the Meatpacking District, Chelsea, and Midtown West. The story begins in the mid-1800s with a man named Cornelius Vanderbilt, though over time it would come to be associated with another Vanderbilt: Gertrude, better known as Whitney.
Once a busy freight line with trains thundering along these tracks, the High Line was later abandoned, only to be rediscovered by the Friends of the High Line, by photographers like Joel Sternfeld, and by visionary designers such as Ricardo Scofidio and landscape master Piet Oudolf.
Walking the High Line is a unique experience — elevated, but never so high that you lose the sounds and scents of the city. Among trees, flowers, and striking architectural landmarks, I’ll lead you to the hidden gems of the High Line, and to the names of the people, architects, and artists who shaped it and still surround it today.
