LOWER EAST SIDE tour

my lower east side walking tour

The Lower East Side is like a vibrant mosaic of history and culture, representing the quintessence of New York. In the mid-to-late 1800s, immigrants from diverse cultures and religious backgrounds came to the United States fleeing from difficult living conditions and persecution. They were seeking new opportunities. However, the harsh reality proved different and more challenging, with the Lower East Side becoming overcrowded, one of the most densely populated areas in the world at that time.

My tour kicks off from one of the most enchanting places in the city: the Synagogue of Eldridge Street. We’ll walk towards the bustling streets chronicled by The Jewish Forward, wander down Division and Orchard, exploring the contrasts of a neighborhood were Yiddish was once one of the most spoken languages and today the vibrant pulse of Chinatown meets the echoes of the past. We’ll pass by beautiful independent stores, one that trades used books for pickles!, interesting museums, like the Tenement and the ICP, and old Jewish delis.
